Abstract

There is provided an optical device, composed of a display source (4), an imaging optical module (8), a projection module (12) having a projection mechanism including an input aperture (10) and output aperture (14) defined by a surface area, and an exit pupil (16). The projection mechanism is non-uniform over the area of the output aperture (14).

Claims

22AMENDED CLAIMS[Received by the International Bureau on 22 December 2005 (22.12.2005) ; original claim 1, amended; remaining claims unchanged]WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. An optical device, comprising: a display source; an exit pupil; an imaging optical module, and a projection module having a projection mechanism, including an input aperture and an output aperture defined by a surface area to project light from said imaging optical module to said exit pupil, characterized in that said projection mechanism is non-uniform over the area of said output aperture and that said imaging optical module has directionality of the display illumination source for coupling light from said source into the input aperture of said projection mechanism.
2. The optical device according to claim I- further comprising a light diffusing mechanism, for diffusing light illuminating said input aperture,
3. The optical device according to claim 2, wherein the light emerging from said display source is concentrated inside a finite solid angle.
4. The optical device according to claim 2, wherein said display source is an LCD.
5. The optical device according to claim 4, wherein said light-diffusing mechanism is an angular selective diffuser for said LCD.
6. The optical device according to claim 5, wherein said angular selective diffuser is a holographic diffuser.
7. The optical device according to claim 4, further comprising a light source and a converging lens located between the light source and said light diffusing mechanism.
8. The optical device according to claim 2, wherein said light-diffusing mechanism is an array of micro-lenses that is aligned with the pixels of said display source.
9. The optical device according to claim 1, wherein said display source is an OLED.
10. The optical device according to claim 9, wherein the emitting distribution function of the pixels in the said OLED are designed to make each pixel diverge into a predefined angle.
11. The optical device according to claim 1, wherein said imaging optical module is a telecentric system.
