Description
No. 885,977. PATENTED APR. 28, 1908 S. B. BROWN.
COASTER. APPLIOATIOKPILED AUG. 19, 1907.
I @nwenfoz attozhew FhliCE.
suns 3. BROWN, OF CINCIN ATI, onioj COASTER.
No. seeev'z.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Snjas B. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gin einnati, in the county of 'Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coasters, of which the following is a s ecfication. ,My invention routes to an improvement in coasters. a
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a coaster with a set of four rollers, two arranged at each end of the base board and in the medial line thereof, and two arranged parallel with each other and between the end rollers and preterabl closer to one of the end rollers than the ot er. These intermediate rollers have their tread'surface a slight distance further from the base hoard than the end rollers afl ordin a rocking ac- ,tion to the base board enab ing a convenient steering of the coaster.
Another object of my invention is to 1'0- ride guards upon the lower face of the ass board to prevent a tilting or upsetting of thecoaster injuring the hands of the user, who in use grasps the edges of the base board.
Other features of my invention relate to the brake mechanism and details of construction more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im proved coaster. Fig. 2- is a bottom plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line w, as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top planview of the brake shoe in a position as applied.
1 represents the base-board. 2 and 3 the end. rollers journaled between the U-shaped limbs of the strips 4. and supported in the medial line 'of the base board. These strips 7 4 fromtheir central bifurcation fiare o tword toward the sides of the base board, he ends being provided with the curved portion 53, projecting from the baseboard form ing guards. The angled portion of the strips extending from the U-shaped limbs to the base-board serve as .braces itorming a rigid journal bearing for the rollers. These strips are securely bolted to the underside of the base board.
6, 7, represent rollers journaled upon an axle 8, said axle 8 being supported upon the Ll-shaped bracket 9. -The ends of the bracket 9 terminate in E's-shaped limbs for securing the bracket to the base-board.-
Spe cification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 19,

Patented April 28, 1908.
1907. Serial No. 389,273.
These intermediate rollers are positioned preferably closer to one of the'en'd rollers than the other. and referably journaled a slight distance laterally from the medial line of the base-board. The 'thead surface of these intermediate rollers is also preferably a slight distance further from the base-board than theend rollers forming a fulcrum for the base-board raising one end roller from tlie surface. This affords convenient means in steerin the coaster.
} The to lowing instrumentalitie's are em ployed for providing a brake. 10 represents a brake-shoe yieldingly 'Inounted upon the base-board 1 bythe spring 11. 12 re re.- sents a link'pivotally connected to the ax e 8. 1.3 represents a connecting link fixed to the brake-shoe 10 and the link 12. 14 represohts an actuating rod to the free end of the ii 12. The opposite end of the rod 14 is connected to a rope 15 which passes upwardly through the baseboard and knotted to retain the same in osition 'within-the rasp of the user. he brake is operated by pulling the rope 15 which will cause link 13 to be swung to the left swinging thebrake-shoe toward a vertical position against the rollers 6 and 7. By this construction friction is a plied to two rollers simultaneously and witi great levrage and the brake-shoe is ulled against the rollers in a direction wit their rotation, thereby formin a very efficient brake withdue wean upon the surface oi the rollers, which are preferably made oi wood, and also preventing the rollers from becoming fiat.
Having described my invention, i. claim A coaster consisting of afiat board, two wheels mediall alined, and two wheels par allel between t e first named wheels and extending in a different plane, said wheel s being supported on the under side of the board, and guards downwardly projected from the front ends of the under side of the board, adapted to rotect the hands gripping the goard, and also adapted to limit stantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto sot SILAS B. BROWN. Witnesses:

Leo ODcNNELL.
