At its rear end the telescope is cradled; as it were, in a cradle-spring 19 formed at its inner end with two coils 20 and terminating in two inwardly inclined rearwardly pitched retaining-ends 21 which are inserted into a pair of correspondingly inclined holes 22 formed in a dovetail rib 23 made integral with and forming a foot for the ring or hand 24 of the rear mounting of the telescope.
At its upper end the ring 24 is formed with s crescont-shaped recess 25 or the reception cl 2. yoke-like shoe 26 having its bearing face 27 COXIVBXGd from front to rear and concaved from end to end, the telescope being pressed upward at its rear end against the said lace 27 by the cradle-spring 19 aforesaid. The said shoe 26 is located at the lower end of a. stem 28 from seat 30 formed at the lower end of a micrometer screw- 31 charnbered'for the reception of the stem 28. The said micrometer screw 31 is mounted in an internally threaded hub 32 formed integrul with the-upper end of the ring 24', this hulnns well as the adjacent portion of the ring, being slotted as at 33 for the purpose of being drawn together by e clamping screw 3 so as to tighten the screwill. as required, and take up wear. At its upper end the screw 31 carries a knurled thimble end of the hub 32, the said thimble and hub being The bearing face 27 of the shoe 26 provides by virtue of its peculiar form described, a line bearing which shifts according to the adjustment of the telescope, while the entire shoe turns upon a vertical axis of the stem 28 to accommodate deflections of the rear end of the telescope to the right or left.
The dovetail rib or foot 23 aforesaid, is arranged laterslly'with respect to the ring 24 end enters a transvcrse dovetail groove 36 in the upper face of a base 37 formed in its lower face with a dovetail groove 38 adapting the base to be slipped over a dovetail fastening block 39 having screw holes 39 and fixed to the top of the barrel by screws 40 one of which is shown in Fig. 3. The said base 37 is provided with u thumbscrew 41 having its end pointed for entrance into a positioning notch 42 located in the left hm'id side of the block 39 so that in case of the removal of the mount from the gun, it may be replaced thereupon in the av act position which it had thereon before it was talccn oil. In order to take up any slocs or wear. and to assist in maintaining the mounting without deviation in any of the positions in which it may be set, i form H shallow oblong recess 50 in the host bevel ol' the loot 23 and in this recess locate a longitudinally bowed spring 51 the crowning central portion of which engages with the front wall of the dovetail lit; in the top oi the base 37.
