TRACTION-CARRIAGE.
SIEGIFICA'I-ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,897,. dated May 5, 1903. Application filed February 25, 1903 Serial lie-145.076. (No model.)
rovided, the lower ends of which are fastened to the bar D, and their upper ends form bearings for the stub-shaft H, which is journaled also in the upright ortion 0 the axle, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawin To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, ISAAC S. FREEMAN, a United States, residing at Lyof Polk and tate of Wisd useful Improvements in Traction-Carriages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
form or box K, which has pivotalfconnection 'with the lower ends of the supporting-bars N, N, and N saidbars N and N being pivotally mounted at their upper ends upon t e stub-shafts 0, carried by the cross-bar D, and the upper end of the bar N being pivotally mounted upon the axle, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Mounted upon said platform or receptacle is a traction-engine Q, an if preferred, motor, either electric type, may
for the purpose of he mechanism.
In the present case hown a traction-engine Q having ipes communicating with two engines,
having a swingin carry a traction engine or motor of any kind whereby power may be imparted through suitable geared mechanism to the tractionwheels.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of (indicated by letters Q',) and each engine is connected with a driving-gear B, Fig. 2 of the drawings. The gear B is fixed to a shaft R, which is journaled in the supports 1?, outer end of each shaft B has fixed thereto a pinion-wheel J, which are in. gear wit the gear-wheel 0, whereby power is communicated from the engines to the traction-wheels. Gear-wheels I are provided, which are in mes with the wheels 0, two of which wheels I are journaled on the stub-shafts O on each .side
this application, and in, which drawingsof the apparatus and a third wheel on a stub- Figurel is a side elevationof my improved shaft H. Connected. to one end of said box traction-carriage, and Fig, 2 is an end elevaor receptacle is a pivoted yoke L, to which a cart may be connected for the convenience of carrying tools, &c.
y ing the features observed that power tion of the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a dropaxle, the horizontal portions A of which form stub-shafts, on which the traction-wheels B are journaled. 'Said traction-wheels B may be of any suitable height, and their highest portions are preferably on line with the high- Fastened to each gear-wheel C, which may be of any suitable d1ameter,'and D designates a bar which is disposed at right angles to the upright portion of the axle A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. ising from the end bars D are the upright rods E, which are arched and supported by the stub-shafts O at the ends of the cross pieces or bars D, and suitable braces G are of my invention it will be from the engines may traction-wheel or the other for thepurpose of controlling the same, the peculiar manner of suspending the carriage the latter is allowed to have a swinging motion, which, however, will enable the apparatus to be in gear in whatever position the platform orbox may be with reference to the axle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-- 7 A traction engine comprising an arched axle, stub-shafts carried at the ends thereof,
s. Suspended from the stub-shaft A is a platthe provision of an apparatus embodybe applied independent of each other to one truck comprising cross-pieces mounted upon said cross-pieces, and a platform pivotally said stub-shafts, gear-wheels journaled in the mounted to the lower ends of said links, and 5 ends of said cross-pieces, gear-Wheels in mesh an intermediate link supported by the stubwith the gear-wheels which rotate With the shafts on the arched axle and pivotally condriving-Wheels, braces G which are fixed at nected to the sides of said platform, as set their lower ends to said cross-pieces and their forth.
upper ends connected together, stub-shafts In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my [0 H journaled in said arched axle and having signature in presence of two witnesses.
bearings at the upper ends of said braces G, ISAAC S. FREEMAN. pinion-wheels carried by said stub-shafts H Witnesses: 1 and in mesh with the gear-wheels C, arched O. GARLID,
rods E fastened to the stub-shafts at the ends A. W. JOHNSON.
