THOMAS C. JOHNSON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS C0,, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
MUSHBQOM-BULLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 13, 1914.
Application filed September 8, 1913. Serial No. 788,648.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. Jormson, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mushroom- B'ullets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the ac .companying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to beat full, clear. and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in sile elevation of a bullet constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the jacket body and jacket tip being broken away. Fig. 2 a corresponding view of one of the modified forms which my invention may assume.
My invention relates toan improvement in that class of mushroom bullets having two-part jackets circumferentially divided towardthepoint of the bullet to permitthe .bullet to more readily mushroom, the object being to produce a bullet of the character described constructed with particular reference to'usin the jackett-ip to spread and tear open t e jacket-body at the time of impact. 1
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a mushroom bullet having certain details .of' construction as will be hereinaftcr desoribed and pointed out in the claims. a
In carrying out my invention, I employ a jacket-body 2 and ajacket-tip 3 made independent of each other ani simultaneously swaged in dies upon a slu of soft metal.
The jacket-tip 3 is slightly reduced. at its open inner end to form a circumfereptial spreading flange 5 which fits snugly W1 'hin the open end of the jacket-body 2. For the retention, of the jacket-tip 3 upon the soft metal core, I provide it, as shown, Wit-ha circumferential band of retaining openings 6 placed end to end and located toward the open inner end of the tip 3. These openings 6 have portions of the core exuded ilito them to form jacket-tip 1o ks which prevent the tip 3 from longitudinal displacement or. rotary movement, and also so weaken the inner end of the tip as to faciiitate its breaking down at the time of impact When the bullet is fired, theedect of the flange 5 of the tip 3 isto spread open the jacket 2 and thus efi'ect a free mushrooming of the bullet..
in th: same manner and operate on the same principle, but the acket is provided instead of. with rectangular openings 6, with openin'gs 10 in the form of the letterW placed end to end.
The construction of Fig. 2 simply illustrates that the openings into which portions of the core are exuded for locking the tip in place, may take an infinite variety of forms, but in any construction the inner ,edgeof the tip will be formed with the spreading flange 5 inserted within the edge of the jacket so that when the tip is crowded longitudinally inward with respect to the jacket theflange 5 will split the jacketbody 8 open and so insure the free breaking down of the forward end of the bullet.
It is to be noted that in my improved bullet, the circumferential line 11' on which the two parts of the jacket are joined will be hardly noticeable and that the joint-exposes no portion whatever of the core.
I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a fulljacketed, sharp-nosed mushroom bullet, cy-
lindrical at its rear end and pointed at its forward end, the said bullet having a softmetal core, a jacket-body swaged thereupon and extending forward toward the point thereof, its forward edge being straight. and a jacket-tip swaged upon the point of the core and having its open inner end,
which is smaller in diameter than the full diameter of the bullet, formed with an annular spreading-flange inserted within the straightforward edge of the jacket-body in line with the said edge thereof and extending rearward beyond the said edge in contact with the inner face thereof for spreading the jacket-body open at the time of the impact of the bullet.
2, As a new article of manufacture, a fulljacketed, sharpnosed, mushroom bullet having a cylindrical rear portion and tapering forward therefrom to a point, the, said bullet comprising a soft-metal core, a
jacket-body swaged thereuponand extendingforward toward the point-thereof, and a jacket-tip applied to the point of the core,
having its inner end made smaller in diameter than the cylindrical portion of the bullet, formed with a spreading-flange adapted to be inserted vithin the outer end of the jaeket-body in line with the edge thereof, for spreading the same open when into the j ticket-bOdY the jacket-tip is driven bullet, and the said by the impact of the tip being formed with ing-openings into which the metal of the one or more retaincore is exuded for securing the tip in place 10 upon the core.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' THOMAS C. JOHNSON.
