I ARTILLERY-PROJECTILE.
i Application led-March 19, 1969. Serial No.- 484,518.
To all (wher/rit mag/"concern:
Be it known that I, KARL VLLER, engineer, a subject of the German Emperor; residing at 1T Fulicherstrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Artillery-Projectiles; and'l'tlo hereby declare the following to be atull, clear, andexactdescription ot Vthe invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to whi'chit appertains to make and use the same.`
This invention relates to-an artillery projectile arid particularly to that 'kind intended for use in tiring against balloons, air ships and the like,4 where it is desired to set the targetj on re as kwell as to do' damage by impact.
According'- tothe presenhinvention the shell comprises a `combination ot shrapnel charge androcket chai-'get' so arranged that during flight the two charges separate and each performs its own nfunction, the flame issuing from the rocket charge serving to ig nite the balloon or other target and the shot of. the shrapnel charge piercing the gas envelop .or body ot the targetand striking the crew, while the slow-burning matrix ,of the shrapnel charge, seton lire by the rocket -lame adds to the destructiveness of the shell.
The invention; as particularly set out in the accompanying claims, will now be de.- scribed with reference to' a preferred einbodiment of the same as illustrated in the aoeompanying drawings, in. which- Figure l is a longitudinal section through the shell; Fig. f? is a transverse section on the line 2-2 ot Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and F ig. 1lis a diagrammatic view representing the projectile in flight 'at about the time of strik,- ing the target. l'
g In these drawings, a represents theV shell casing, which contains in its medial portion the shrapnel shot embedded in a matrix o of lslow-burning, combustible "material, In the rear portion" of thevcasing the expelling charge c is separated from thelshrapnel charge l) ZJ by the diskd, and surrounds the primer e. In the fore part of the shell is the primer j' of thetime fuse, and yet in. front of the timing device is mounted lthe rocket comprising the cap-gcontaining the charge h retained therein by the plate z'.

this plateQbeing provided with perforations Z4, rearwardly extending on diverging lines, for the emission of flame fromthe charge h inilightafter the manner of the usual rocket.
When the shell is fired from fa gun, the setback causes the primer f to strike against the anvil f and theflame travels by way or" the time ring m m to the flash charge n nel Charge issuing in the flame area to ther.
rear of the rocket, the combustible matrix o is thereby set on fire and scattered doing'.
much tire damage-in addition to that done bv the flame issuing on diverging lines from the rocket which pursues its course through' the gas envelop of the balloon or other target, Yif well aimed. The shrapnel shoty scat- V tering in the known way add to the de'struc` tiveeiiectr of the shell. It for -any reason the time fuse should prove defective, orbe' too slow in action, the charge 0 will be set oit'when the shell strikes the target by the concussion, the sudden stoppage 'causing the primer e to strike the anvil cf' and setting 'oil' the charge c through the opening e2.'
VIn this oase the flame travels in the reverse direction through the channel 0 to the charge n, and'thence. through the channel p vtothe rocket charge '7a'. vlf the course ot the shell is stopped by such striking ofY the target before .being set oit, the llames from. the rocket, the scattering burning matrix and the'shot, together with the explosive force of the charge c alleontribute to thedestrucf tive localized 'effect of the shell.
V`What I claim is.:
l. In a projectile, a shrapnel charge anda rrocket.charge7 and means to simultaneously 'expel the charges and to ignite Vthe rocket charge.v
2. In a projectile, a shrapnel charge, com'- prising' shot embedded Vin a combustible matrix, and a rocket charge in advance of the shrapnel charge and arranged to emlt iiauies tothe rear, and means to simultaneously expel the two charges and ignite the/rocket charge.
l 3. In a projectile, a shrapnel charge comprising shot embedded in a slow-burning matrix, and a rocket charge in advance of v the shrapnel charge and arranged to emit "charge in,
the casing in front of' the expelling iiame to'the rearon diverging lines; an ex .Y peiling charge to expel the two charges, and 10 Aa time fuse to simultaneously ignite vthe expelling charge and the rocket charge.
.aL-In a'projectile, a casing, an expelling t' e rear thereof, a shrapnel charge charge, a rocket' removably seated in the casing in advance of the shrapnel charge, said rocket containing a chamber lilled with a fiume-producing charge and open to the rear through channels, and means to simultaneously iffnite the expelllng charge and -the rocket c arge:
5. In ai projecti1e, a casing, an expelling charge in the rear thereof, a shrapnel charge in the casing in front o the expelling charge and comprising shot embedded in a. combus- Y expelling charge and the rocket charge..
6. In a projectile, a casing, an expelling charge in the rear thereof, a shrapnel charge in the casing in front of the expelling charge and comprising shot embedded in a combustible matrix, a rocket removably seated in the casing in advance of the shrapnel charge and comprising a body containing a confined charge with outlet to the rear,` a time fuse arranged to simultaneously ignite the expelling charge and the rocket charge, a concussion primer communicating with the expelling charge and an igniting communication between the expelling and rocket charges.
7 In a projectile, a casing, an expelling charge in the rear thereof, a shrapnel charge in the casing in front of the expelling charge and comprising shot embedded in a combusthe casing in advanceof the shrapnel charge and comprising a body containing a conined charge with outlet to the rear, the two charges in communication by way of a passage, a iiash charge in communication with said passage, and a timefuse comprising a firing primer and time train leading to the flash charge.
8. In a projectile, a casing,l an expelling charge in the rear thereof, a shrapnel charge in the casing in front of the expelling charge and comprising shot embedded in a combustible matrix, a rocket removably seated in the casing in advance of the shrapnel charge and comprising a body containing a confined charge with outlet tothe rear, the two charges in communication `by way of a passage,l a flash charge in communication with said passage, and a time fuse comprising a firing' primer and time train leading to the liash charge and a concussion primer communicating directlyl with the expelling charge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixedmy signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
