The North Pacific Gyre, where rubbish in the Pacific Ocean swirls in an eddy of indeterminable size, was the destination for the Kaisei Project. Tracking their path in Google Earth and Maps along the way, they collected scientific information on plastic marine debris to determine comprehensive solutions. The paths from their expedition were created at sea in near real time via a satellite uplink using mobile phones. The scientists were able to use their phones to record a geographic location and a video was taken at that location, which was then mapped to Google Earth instantly. Science was taken out of the laboratory and classroom, and shared with the world in real time.
