Nintendo Switch trailer shows NBA 2K17 and Skyrim, but they’re not confirmed for release

With today’s Nintendo Switch announcement, the company came out of the gate promising support from nearly 50 third-party developers and publishers. The reveal trailer for the hybrid console featured footage of two very different third-party games: Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and 2K Sports’ NBA 2K17.

That might lead you to believe that those games are coming to the Nintendo Switch, perhaps even as launch titles alongside the system’s debut in March 2017. NBA 2K17 was released a month ago on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, while Skyrim Special Edition, a remaster of the original 2011 game, arrives next week on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

However, when contacted by Polygon, representatives for both 2K Sports and Bethesda declined to confirm whether their respective games were in development for Nintendo’s new console. The two publishers sent remarkably similar statements, too, telling Polygon they were "happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Nintendo" on the trailer. Both companies added, "While we are not confirming any specific titles at this time, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Nintendo and support of Nintendo Switch."

The fact that the statements are essentially identical suggests that Bethesda’s and 2K Sports’ hands are tied as far as announcing Nintendo Switch games is concerned. But that doesn’t make sense, either. A Ubisoft representative told Polygon earlier today — affirming an announcement from E3 2016 — that Just Dance 2017 is in development for the Switch.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo to ask about NBA 2K17 and Skyrim, and will update this article with any information we receive. The company said in its announcement of the Nintendo Switch that it will provide more details on the console and its launch lineup sometime before its March debut.
