Why Black Mirror is called Black Mirror - and the real reason will make you question everything

Series creator Charlie Brooker has revealed the reason behind the name

Black Mirror - Season 4 Official Trailer

Black Mirror is full of mysteries, but perhaps one of the biggest lies in its name.

As you sit bingeing the popular Netflix series have you ever wondered where it came from?

Perhaps you thought it referred to the abyss that lies before us, the despair in the world, or the technology black hole we're being sucked into.

There's a million reasons we could come up with, but there's only one right answer, and now we know it.

Series creator Charlie Brooker confirmed the real reason behind the name in a chat with Channel 4, the show's original home.

"What I took it to mean was when a screen is off – when a screen is off it looks like a black mirror.

“Because any TV, any LCD, any iPhone, any iPad – something like that – if you just stare at it, it looks like a black mirror, and there’s something cold and horrifying about that, and it was such a fitting title for the show.”

"I mean, I don’t know what else we would’ve called it – Spooky Technology Time?! It would’ve been rubbish", he added. "I quite like the fact that people are watching it on their TV or on their laptop, or their smartphone or whatever, and then as the end credits start running and the screen cuts to black, they see themselves reflected."
