Spurs have become the latest club to reject an invitation from the Football League to play in their revamped EFL Trophy.

Manchester United have already decided against joining the competition which will replace the old Johnstone’s Paints Trophy. Other Premier League clubs are expected to follow.

The two clubs were among 16 with Category One Academy status, including relegated Newcastle, handed an invitation.

But United have already decided to remain focused on the Academy League and the U21 Premier League International Cup.

Spurs fear the scheduling of the EFL Trophy group stage fixtures will clash with international breaks when many of their full-time academy players are set to be away representing their countries.

Spurs will instead continue with their commitment to their young players having an established pathway to the first team under Mauricio Pochettino.

They will also continue sending players out on loan to play senior competitive football. The likes of England stars Harry Kane, Andros Townsend, and Danny Rose all had loan spells elsewhere before making it into Tottenham's first-team picture. So too the likes of Tom Carroll and Ryan Mason.

The other clubs invited to take part in the EPL Trophy were: Arsenal , Chelsea, Everton, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.
