Sam Allardyce stamped his authority on his first England squad by axing Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere.

But there was a shock call-up with West Ham’s Michail Antonio the only new name for the opening World Cup qualifier in Slovakia next Sunday.

Barkley did not play a minute at the European Championship while Wilshere has only made two substitute appearances for Arsenal this season.

Wilshere and Barkley are both fit so they are surprising omissions as they are seen as two of England’s best midfield talents.

Allardyce, admitting it was a tough call to leave the pair out, said: “Everybody, Jack Wlshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain was probably looking to get back in but we will continue to monitor, will watch everybody, who is to say they won’t be in next time and keep the pressure on me by playing well.”

The new national team boss waited until the weekend's Premier League action was over to reveal his line-up, which already included Joe Hart after the manager confirmed he wouldn't be dropped despite being frozen out by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

He will however be pushed by Fraser Forster and Tom Heaton, who are both playing regularly for their clubs Southampton and Burnley.

Phil Jagielka and Theo Walcott have also been recalled, along with Luke Shaw.
