England boss Roy Hodgson's boat-ride instead of attending Iceland game sums up how dreams were sold down river

In-Seine trip to see the sights of Paris with assistant Ray Lewington one of many mind-boggling decisions made as Euros challenge sank without trace

Hodgson sent assistants to scout Iceland vs Austria, but he only watched it on TV after river cruise

Roy Hodgson looked like any other tourist when he took a luxury cruise down the River Seine.

England manager Hodgson and his assistant Ray Lewington enjoyed in the scenery, gazing up at the Eiffel Tower on a gloriously hot day in Paris.

All very nice, but elsewhere last Wednesday afternoon in the French capital, Iceland - potentially the Three Lions ' next opponents in the last-16 round of the Euros - were playing.

Their match against Austria was beamed into the England team hotel and Hodgson returned in time from his day trip to watch it. But it is hardly the same.

Sadly, that just about summed up Hodgson’s Euro 2016 - a comedy of errors ending in English football’s most humiliating result of all time . And that from a man who had overseen the nation's worst World Cup finals campaign two years ago.

After restoring some pride by leading England to ten straight wins in qualifying, Hodgson fell into familiar traps.

From picking half-fit players to ridiculous pampering at the team hotel, even giving their silly lion mascot its own accreditation, it shows Hodgson lost sight of what got them there in the first place.

While Hodgson and Lewington were on their cruise, five other members of England staff - including Gary Neville and technical scout Andy Scoulding - did go to the Stade de France to watch Iceland play .
