The opening night of the Checkatrade Trophy saw record low attendances as fans boycotted the revamped competition.

The newly branded tournament got underway with Under-23 teams from the Premier League and Championship facing League One and League Two sides in the much-maligned tournament.

Supporters up and down the country were urged to boycott the matches, with the hashtag #BTeamBoycott being used on Twitter to urge fans not to attend the games.

And many obliged with some dismal attendances for a number of clubs.

Just 1,504 fans attended Bolton's defeat to Everton's youngsters - a record for the Macron Stadium.

Elsewhere, there were just 392 present for Fleetwood's clash with Blackburn, 461 at Wimbledon's win over Swansea and only 585 turning out for Accrington vs Crewe.

Everton, Norwich, Swansea, Stoke, Reading, Southampton, Wolves, West Ham, Blackburn, West Brom, Derby, Middlesbrough, Leicester and Brighton all fielded U23 sides.

However, several were forced to name a team made up of teenagers or out-of-favour first teamers due to many players being away on international duty.
