Joey Barton stormed out of Rangers last week - with a coffee machine under his arm.
The midfielder was furious after he was frogmarched into the first-team dressing room and ordered to empty his locker.
Barton had been ordered to train with the Rangers youth team at the end of his two-month suspension after his training-ground bust-up with manager Mark Warburton.
He was also banned from using the senior players' car park and canteen, reports the Daily Record .
As part of a peace deal Barton was expected to train with the kids until January when he will return to English football with Burnley and Aston Villa already leading the chase for his signature.
But he signed off on the sick with stress on Friday morning after just one training session with the kids.
And before he left, he walked into the first-team dining room to take back a top of the range coffee machine he had bought for his team mates.
A source said: “A few weeks before his bust up with the manager Joey bought a coffee machine and had it put into the first team dining room. It was a gesture of good will.
“But after all the humiliation he was put through on Thursday he decided to take it back. It was clear at that moment that he would not be returning. The next day he was signed off with stress and he’s not been seen at the training ground since.”
The 34-year-old is now on the brink of landing a bumper pay off to severe all ties with Rangers after being signed off on the sick.
It is understood the Scouser will meet with the Ibrox club’s managing director Stewart Robertson before the end of the week to thrash out a financial settlement and terminate his £20,000-a-week contract.
It’s believed Rangers are willing to pay Barton up to eight weeks worth of wages - a sum in excess of £150,000 - up front rather than allow the stand-off to fester until January, when the transfer window reopens.
The fresh twist in the Barton saga comes just days after he was allowed back into Auchenhowie for the first time since ripping into Warburton in the wake of a derby thrashing at Celtic Park on September 10.
By providing the club with a doctor’s sick-note Barton has effectively brought the lingering feud to a head.
Meanwhile, Rangers fan group Club 1872 have announced the purchase of a further 192,550 shares in the club, taking their total to 6.25 per cent. They are now the fifth largest shareholder at the club.
