An angler who received death threats after catching Britain's biggest carp could lose his record, according to reports.

Tom Doherty, 33, caught the 70lb 4oz carp known as 'Big Rig' on Monday.

But the whopper sparked a fierce debate in the angling community, with some saying it is not deserving of the record.

The row centred on claims the fish was "farmed" overseas until it reached its enormous size before being dropped in the British lake.

Traditionalists say the record should be held by a "wild" carp which has spent years growing to its full weight.

Rob Hales, who runs the fishing lake Shifnal near Telford, Shropshire, reportedly confirmed to The Sun the carp had been "farmed" to a sizeable weight before it was caught.

And now Mike Heylin from the Angling Trust told the newspaper he expects the record to be voided.

"If it was stocked above the weight, I am assuming the committee will reject it," he said.
