New blue passports, seen as sign Britain is 'taking back from EU' could be made in France or Germany

Two companies in the running for £490million contract are believed to be French and German

British passports will be blue following Brexit, ministers have confirmed(PA)

New blue passports have been hailed as a sign Britain is seizing back control from the EU - but they could end up being made in France or Germany.

The plans were unveiled to huge fanfare, and former UKIP leader Nigel Farage today voiced his delight that the burgundy passports will be scrapped.

But two companies battling for a lucrative £490million contact producing passports are believed to be French and German, the Sunday Times has reported.

And yesterday backbench Tory MP Mark Prichard told the House of Commons he believes the documents could be made in Berlin, calling for a debate on the matter.

He said: "Does the Leader of the House share my concern that the new British passport from 2019, a black passport not a purple passport, could be designed and printed in Germany?

"Made in Berlin, rather than made in Britain."

Bergundy passports have been used since 1988(PA)

The new design will not feature the European Union logo and the colour will change for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Pages inside the new passports will include images from across the UK after Britain leaves the UK in 2019.
