Lorry drivers have been caught apparently eating, reading and using their mobile phones on Britain's motorways as police forces step up efforts to catch potentially fatal lapses at the wheel.

One driver even appeared to use his elbows to steer in damning pictures captured in recent days.

It comes as police forces step up efforts to catch out distracted drivers while motoring experts and campaigners issued fresh pleas for a shift in attitudes towards road safety.

Drivers travelling on roads in England in recent days were snapped apparently looking at paperwork and talking on a mobile phone, in pictures taken by the Press Association.

The AA said the ramifications of such behaviour can be "dire", while road safety charity Brake described the images as "shocking".

Four drivers are pictured on the M20 near Ashford in Kent, two seemingly reading and one holding a piece of cutlery and a food container.

Another appears to have their arms crossed and elbows on the steering wheel.

One driver of a lorry on the M4 near Swindon is captured looking at a piece of paper, while another apparently uses a mobile phone near junction 46 of the M1 in Yorkshire.
