A High Court judge ruled today that baby Charlie Gard's life support can be withdrawn by doctors - against his parents' wishes.

The eight-month-old's dad, Chris Gard, screamed "no" and covered his face as the decision was announced by Mr Justice Francis.

Chris, who had tucked his dying son's toy monkey into the top pocket of his suit, was joined at the court by Charlie's mum, Connie Yates.

She hung her head and broke down in tears as the judge ruled her child's ventilation could be stopped so he could "die with dignity".

Giving his decision, Mr Justice Francis paid tribute to Chris and Connie's "absolute dedication to their wonderful boy" since his birth.

Specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London had said they thought it was time to stop providing life support for Charlie.
