These photos offer a first look at Stockport’s brand new cinema, which is due to open next week.

The Light cinema is at the centre of the £45m Redrock Development, which has been gradually taking shape next to the M60, and will open to the public on Friday, November 24.

The cinema chain was started in 2011 by Keith Pullinger and John Sullivan in New Brighton on The Wirral and has gone from strength to strength; Stockport is its eighth site, following an opening in Bolton earlier this year, and there are plans in the pipeline to open 13 more in the next two years.

Keith says the idea behind The Light is to ‘take the spirit of traditional, independent cinemas and bring that into a modern environment’.

“Historically cinemas have had something quite magical about them,” he said.

“In the 1980s and 90s when they started to move into big, out of town properties it all became a bit characterless and lacking in atmosphere.”

He says part of their aim is to bring cinemas back into town centres, particularly those in need of regeneration.

“Cinemas are a good catalyst for bringing people into the town centre, particularly in the evenings,” Keith added.
