Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore is moving to Salford for a week to record a new single and perform live.
The indie rock legend behind Dirty Boots and Kool Thing is headed for Islington Mill for a seven day session in which he'll create a new 7-inch of songs - complete with liner notes and original art - inspired Salford.
Moore is being brought to the Mill by record label and music residency programme Samarbeta and the project, called Watch the Sky, will be crafted from sounds of the city captured in the field by Moore and his collaborators.
Joining him on the project are London poet and activist Radieux Radio, who worked with Moore on his last solo album Rock 'n' Roll Consciousness, plus a group of classical and rock musicians still to be announced.
The residency at the James Street arts space will be the eighth project that Samarbeta has worked on and follows on from their current event at Islington Mill, Crime Scene, by Davis McLean and Phil Carney.
And the week long residency, from February 26 until March 4, will culminate in a live show from Moore and his collaborators in the Burrow space at the Mill on Friday, March 3 (7.30pm, £18).
There'll also be an exhibition of Moore's artwork, and a special poetry reading session featuring extracts from Moore's book Stereo Sanctity: Lyrics & Poems, also at the Mill on March 1 (7.30pm, free).
Moore, who started Sonic Youth in 1980 after moving from Connecticut to New York City, recently completed an artistic residency at The Louvre, in Paris. He is also professor of music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen
