CITY'S serene FA Youth Cup progress continued without a hiccup at Home Park last night.

The competition's long- distance travellers built up a two-goal lead by half-time and then comfortably eased away as they added Argyle's scalp to those collected at Reading and Bristol City in previous rounds.

They now await the winner's of tonight's clash between Sunderland and Charlton in the two-legged semi-finals as they bid to win the Cup for the first time since 1986.

"It was another excellent performance from the lads though the scoreline didn't really do Plymouth justice," said Academy chief Jim Cassell before making his travel arrangements to watch the Blues' last-four opponents.

"We seem to be peaking at the right time and at least we didn't fall behind at any stage. Plymouth didn't get to the last eight by being a poor side but we controlled the game and played our football the way we want to play it. The only disappointment was not keeping a clean sheet."

"It is nice to be in the last four but we are taking nothing for granted and it is equally important that the team and the individuals are progressing."

City took the lead after a cagey opening when Vladimir Weiss teased and tormented Ryan Brett before delivering a cross that fell for Danny Sturridge to effortlessly convert his sixth goal of an ever more impressive campaign.

A spirited Pilgrims' fightback was led by the nippy and aware Ashley Barnes whose angled snap shot was flicked over the bar by the well-positioned Greg Hartley.

But the comeback was short-lived. Eight minutes before the break Donal McDermott's corner on the right was nodded across goal by Dedryck Boyata into the path of his central defensive partner Ben Mee and the skipper made no mistake from around the penalty spot.

The Blues had the chance to go three up five minutes after the break but McDermott dragged his shot wide.

A clincher wasn't long coming though as Ball continued his goal spree by finding the bottom corner and then substitute Alex Nimley, with his first touch, rounded off City's scoring with an individual effort.

The last word though fell to the home side by dint of a long range shot from Jarred Stevens.

CITY: Hartley, Trippier, McGivern, Boyata, Mee, Tutte, Weiss (Mak 75), Kay, Ball, Sturridge (Nimley 84), McDermott (Tsiaklis 68). Not used: Clegg, and Ibrahim.

CITY'S reserves capped a fine night for the club with a 4-2 win over Everton. Felipe Caicedo, Emile Mpenza (2) and Nery Castillo were the scorers.
