Stewards have been praised for keeping Bury and Millwall fans apart after trouble flared at Saturday’s game.
About 100 Millwall fans rushed towards a gate separating supporters of the London club, who were in the Manchester Road end, from home fans in the South Stand.
The spat started just before kick-off and was captured on video.
A small number of stewards managed to stop the groups of fans reaching each other. Police had a heavy presence in streets surrounding the ground and sent officers into the ground and remained in the Millwall end for the duration of the game.
There were 3,600 fans at Gigg Lane for the game, of which about 1,000 were from Millwall.
Bury fan Stephen Edyvean said: “A Milwall fan got onto the pitch as some of their fans were rushing towards the gate. He was goading Bury fans in the South Stand. One Bury fan then got on the pitch and hit him, and he went straight down. I saw the stewards then put the Millwall fan back in their end.
“I must commend the stewards for the way they kept the gate shut to keep the fans apart. But Bury have a hard core of about 40 fans who cause trouble too - how the club and stewards can’t control 40 kids is beyond me.
