Ayr United captain Nicky Devlin has revealed how he turned down the Scottish Premiership for another year as Somerset skipper.

Devlin, 22, today penned a new one year deal to lead United's return to the Championship.

And he insists not even the lure of the top flight could tempt him to head for the exit.

Devlin, who last year became Ayr's youngest ever captain, led the Honest Men to promotion via the play-offs last month.

Now he wants Ian McCall's men to make a big impact when they take on the likes of Dundee United and Hibs next term.

He said: "A Premiership club made me an offer before I drove down to sign today, but there was never a question of me going.

"I love being the captain of this club and when you look at some of the places we're going to next season, it's a really exciting time to be here.
