Byres Road diners in lucky escape as large chunk of masonry narrowly misses them after falling off roof in Glasgow's west end

EMERGENCY services treated one member of the public for shock after the incident outside Little Italy pizzeria.

DINERS ran for cover after a large chunk of masonry fell off a roof into a busy street this afternoon.

Restaurant goers at Little Italy pizzeria in Glasgow had a miracle escape after the block plunged from several storeys into the eatery’s external dining area just before 5pm.

One diner was treated for shock as emergency services and council officials moved in to check out the safety of the building in the city’s west end. The section of pavement on Byres Road was cordoned off as officials moved in.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We received the call at about 4.40pm. A large piece of masonry had fallen from a flat about Little Italy. No-one was injured but one patron was shaken.

“The pavement has been cordoned off but the street is still open. The fire service and building control are checking the safety of the building.”
