Wales to get £1m payday in China Cup... but only if Gareth Bale plays

  • Wales will profit hugely when they compete in the China Cup next month
  • They will bank a seven-figure sum, but only if Real Madrid star Gareth Bale plays
  • There will also be a £50,000 penalty clause if Aaron Ramsey doesn't show

Wales are in line for a £1million payday by playing in the Far East next month - but only if Gareth Bale features.

Sportsmail understands the Welsh FA will bank the seven-figure sum tax free for competing in the China Cup during the March international break.

Yet should Bale be unable to appear the total will be reduced by £100,000, such is the draw of the Real Madrid forward. Terms also include a £50,000 penalty clause if Aaron Ramsey does not show.

Multiple sources have indicated that all squad members are eager to play in the first game of Ryan Giggs's tenure and Wales expect both Bale and Ramsey to fly out if fit.

But it is also anticipated clubs will want dialogue over the 11,000-mile round trip to the city of Nanning, in the south west of China. Wales play the hosts on March 22 before going on to face either Uruguay or Czech Republic on March 26.

Should Real progress past Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, the first leg of their quarter-final will come on a week later on April 3 or 4. A number of Premier League clubs will also be entering crucial periods.

The potential presence of Welsh football's star figures played a big part in China extending an invitation to the country. Bale and Ramsey were named specifically, alongside Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, when the tournament was announced last November.

Giggs is eagerly looking forward to starting his tenure in earnest but is yet to announce his backroom team, more than a month after being unveiled.

It is believed the 44-year-old wants to make changes to the Wales set-up with former Manchester United assistant Albert Stuivenberg and ex-team-mate Paul Scholes under consideration for a No 2 role. United's Tony Strudwick has also been spoken to about a position as new head of performance.
