Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone reveals why he will not sign his son Giovanni, despite goal-scoring spree

Despite a strong first season in Italian football, scoring 11 goals for Serie A strugglers Genoa, there is one manager who Giovanni Simeone will never be able to impress enough to be signed... his father.

Iconic former player and current Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has admitted this week he would not bring his own son to his club, despite his stock quickly rising in European football.

Giovanni is still finding his way in the Italian top-flight division, but 11 goals in his maiden campaign has already forced some of Europe's top clubs to sit up and take notice.

Speaking of his son's mercurial form this week, Diego spoke about the prospect of signing the 21-year-old and admitted: 'It would be too big a sacrifice and playing football shouldn't be a sacrifice. 

'It is just a game, even though it is played by professionals.

'Giovanni has had a fantastic year at Genoa and scoring 11 goals in Italy in your first year isn't easy.

'Thinking about seeing him in one of my teams would mean giving him a responsibility that wouldn't be good for him.

'Giovanni has qualities that I like a lot and with effort and hard work he will definitely become a big player, but not with my team.

'There are a lot of clubs that can give him great opportunities,' he added.
