Wales handed ominous World Cup warning as pool rivals Fiji smash strong New Zealand Maori side

If anyone thinks Pool D is going to be just about Wales and Australia, they can think again

WalesOnline's predicted Rugby World Cup squad

Warren Gatland and his Wales players have been given a timely reminder qualification from their World Cup pool will not be just about the clash against Australia - by a rampant Fiji.

The South Sea islanders recorded their first win against the New Zealand Maori since 1957 with a hugely impressive 27-10 success in Suva on Saturday morning.

It was a victory that carried all the more significance given the strength of the Maori team which featured a large contingent of Kiwi players who were deemed unlucky not to make the All Blacks squad for this summer's Rugby Championship.

Fiji played some superb rugby, especially in the first half, and brought a level of intensity their opponents couldn't live with.

The hosts starting XV contained 14 players who are based in either England or France and the Fijians evidently got through some meaningful work at their recent pre-World Cup training camp if this display is any indicator.

They were 22-0 ahead after 46 minutes after tries from full-back Alivereti Veitokani and back rower Viliami Mata.

The Maori rallied in the final quarter, but a touchdown from centre Waisea Nayacelevu sealed the win for Fiji.

Wales, who are currently at their altitude training camp in the Swiss Alps, will face Australia, Fiji, Georgia and Uruguay in Pool D in Japan this autumn.

And while it is understandable to view the group as a shoot-out between Gatland's men and the Wallabies, this Fiji performance indicates progress may be less straightforward.

A patched up Wales side saw off the Fijians in the 2015 pool stages with a hard-fought 23-13 win at the Principality Stadium. They also routed the islanders 66-0 in 2011.

But, infamously, they were mugged in 2007 in Nantes, when an inept Welsh display allowed Fiji to spring a shock and send Gareth Jenkins' side home early before the knockout stage.
