The festive period is notorious for generating more rubbish than usual and if you are limited to only three black bin bags, you might struggle to fit it all in.

But there is a way to apply for an exemption so you can fill more than the allocated three bags.

The three-bag limit, introduced in Swansea in 2014, was aimed at forcing householders to recycle as much of their rubbish as possible.

Keeping to the limit is even more important now Swansea Council is considering checking black bin bags at the kerbside and fining those not recycling properly.

You can get extra purple bags for nappies

Not all household waste can be recycled though, which is why it is worth checking whether you might be eligible for an exemption.

Certain households which produce large quantities of non-recyclable waste can apply for additional bags. This means houses with multiple occupants (HMOs) and large families can be given extra bags to help with difficulties with the limit.

Exemptions are available for:

  • Waste such as pet litter or bedding. This waste can't be recycled and should be placed in our special clear bags.
  • Nappies. This waste can be recycled and should be disposed of in our special purple bags. They are collected every two weeks as part of our hygiene waste service.

To apply for an exemption you will need to request an exemption application form from the Swansea Council website. If you are granted an exemption it will be valid for 1 year initially and your waste may be monitored.
