Viewers watched as the dramatic closing speeches were delivered, and saw Ward's hope slipping away.

But as the tense moments aired, some viewers couldn't help but notice the order of the court speeches were wrong, and took to Twitter to moan.

One said: "WHY is the prosecution closing speech coming after the defence one? #thetrialofchristinekeeler"

Another observed: "Interesting order of closing speeches #thetrialofchristinekeeler."

Another viewer questioned: #TheTrialOfChristineKeeler Er, doesn't the defence sum up AFTER the prosecution?!?!?!?!”

However the grisly outcome could not be changed, and at the end of the episode Ward grabbed a bottle of pills and whiskey in a bid to take his own life.

Viewers will see in the next episode that he takes the overdose, is later found guilty while in a coma, and dies days later.

The scandal came to light after one of Keeler's ex-lovers fired gunshots at Dr Stephen Ward's flat in Marylebone, where Keeler was cowering inside.

And rumours began to swirl about her fling with the government minister.

Profumo was forced to quit as a Cabinet minister after lying to the House of Commons about the affair - and an internal investigation found he had been guilty of an "indiscretion".

The scandal tainted the whole Tory government.

Months later Harold Macmillan quit as prime minister, citing ill health, and his successor Alec Douglas-Home lost the election the following year.

The judge laid most of the blame on Ward, who he described as "utterly immoral".
