After starting his managerial career in Italy he is ready to return to England, where his best three years were at Wednesday.

“It is where this city that gave me everything and I gave blood when I played for them,” he said.

“Now I am ready to bring them back to the top of the league. I am sure about that.

“This is a club that needs to be in the Premier League again because they are a big club, one of the oldest clubs in England with history.

“They deserve to be at the top and so to the fans as they are incredible. I know them and how much they deserve this.”

Carbone was an Owl from 1996-99 and lit up the Premier League, before spells at Aston Villa and Bradford.

He went onto do his coaching badges after hanging up his boots, managed himself and was assistant to Walter Zenga at Crotone in Serie A.

'I LOVE SHEFFIELD'

But his spell with Wednesday has always stuck with him - and he is ready to seize his chance following Steve Bruce’s departure for Newcastle.

He said: “I’ve put my heart into working back in England, especially this opportunity with Sheffield Wednesday looking for a manager.

“I really love Sheffield and my family were very happy when we were there.

“I hope they have a chance to consider my name because I want this more than anything in the world.

“When I was there, in three years I had three managers, firstly David Pleat and then after that Ron Atkinson - and I loved Big Ron! The big man! Then I had Danny Wilson and overall it was a really fantastic three years.

“All the fans know that because I still talk with them on social media and we talk about the memories and they were incredible memories.

“We talk about the games and the goals - honestly, it is my dream to have the chance to do it all again as a manager. The only thing I want at the moment is this job.”

Carbone says his style of management is similar to him as a player.

The Italian was used to playing against stubborn defences in his homeland but has vowed to attack.

He said: “My style is to be positive and to defend by going forward. We need to go forward and to attack - we never start backwards.

“The mentality must be that we all defend together but to be aggressive. I don’t want to defend in my own area, I want to defend in the opponents’ area.”

His mentor is Cesare Prandelli, who coached him at Parma and he rates as a great man-manager.

He said: “Cesare treated players with respect and like they were all the same, whether they are old or young it was important that they were the same.

“This respect is very important as every player must be part of the team, 22 players who don’t know who will be in the team on matchday, all ready to play.

"I don’t want to play with just 11 players. I like to involve in all the players.”
