Chelsea’s Andy Carroll pursuit is a perfect example of the club failing its managers

Why is it that Chelsea seem to go around in never ending circles of success, through to shooting ourselves in the foot?

We bring in a new manager who is almost instantly successful, likeable, does well with the squad and ticks all the boxes.

Then we fail to properly back them in the transfer market, cause a squeeze in the squad and offer sub-standard players to said manager for reasons only Roman knows.

I’m reminded of Jose Mourinho’s famous ‘shopping at Waitrose’ press conference, where he remarked that “Omelette, eggs. No eggs, no omelettes. It depends on the quality. In the supermarket you have eggs, class one, class two, class three.

“Some are more expensive than others, some give you better omelettes. When the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem.”

Typical Mourinho, but as with much the man says there is a lot of truth to it.

It seems that this analogy could then be further applied to the situation our current manager finds himself in, and if the reports of our target ‘egg’ are to be believed, it seems the Chelsea hierarchy are sending Conte to the foodbank for his eggs.

Andy Carroll, is a target for Chelsea. Yes, apparently you read that right. Andy Carroll. The Liverpool reject currently playing his trade at our old friends West Ham, setting the league on fire with a massive tally of two goals this season, that Andy Carroll could soon be playing for us.

Considering the stature of our club and the competitions we’re supposed to be targeting, and given our rivals City, United and Liverpool aren’t shy in backing their managers with funds to strengthen, you have to ask just what the motivation behind this move is, and what its implications are.

It’s well known that the manager doesn’t have the final say in transfers at Chelsea, and we also know that clearly he doesn’t rate Batshuayi, so a reported six-month loan deal for the Belgian suggests to me more about Conte than it does our backup striker.

If the club were backing the manager completely in giving him the squad he wanted, Batshuayi would be moved on permanently knowing he’s not in the managers plans. Similarly with Carroll, it smacks of short-termism and if ever a player looked like a stop gap then he is it!

We clearly need a striker but it seems that there will be no large investment in that area, despite the reported rumours about us hijacking the Sanchez deal, the last thing the club wants is to spend big on a player who may not fit the next manager’s plans.

These are worrying times for Chelsea, yet sadly not anything new for us. We again find ourselves with a manager we all love, and who again seems to be undermined by those in the corridors of power at Stamford Bridge.

The chase for Andy Carroll is a sad indictment of the state of our club at the moment, but even sadder for me is the indication that this summer’s transfers will again include that of a new manager.
