Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is still pondering return to America to become new MLS commissioner
Gazidis promised this summer would be a 'catalyst for change' but looks to have lost power struggle with Arsene Wenger who penned new deal in May
IVAN GAZIDIS is still considering quitting Arsenal and returning to America with the MLS.
The Gunners chief executive lost the summer power struggle with manager Arsene Wenger over the structural changes at the club, as the Frenchman penned a new two-year deal.
The Arsenal boss is in the mix to become the new MLS commissioner, if Dan Garber quits next year when his contract expires.
Gazidis, 53, earns £2.5million-a-year at the Emirates promised this summer would be a “catalyst for change” as Arsenal finished fifth and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
However, the changes he pushed for, including a director of football were scrapped by owner Stan Kroenke as Wenger was unwilling to relinquish his power.
Gazidis served under Garber as deputy commissioner for seven years before accepting his current job at Arsenal in 2008.
Garber earns almost £4million-a-year, plus bonuses, as MLS commissioner which is significantly more than what Gazidis was paid by Arsenal last year.
There has been no announcement on whether or not Garber plans to stand down from his post at the end of his current contract, but Gazidis is thought to be in the running to replace him.
Gazidis had already been identified as a candidate for roles inside the US Soccer Federation and the organising committee for the 2026 World Cup should the US and Mexico joint bid be accepted by Fifa.
If Gazidis stays on long term at Arsenal, he could take a more hands on role in player recruitment following the announcement transfer negotiator Dick Law will leave this month.
