A TESCO worker was left with a broken back after suspected shoplifters in a rented car rammed customers who fought back with golf clubs and trolleys, her pal claims.

Chaos unfolded in the car park of the Tesco in Rickmansworth, Herts, at around 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

Police believe the driver and passenger were involved in an "incident" inside the store where a person was challenged for allegedly trying to steal alcohol.

And now reports claim a Tesco worker had to spend Christmas laid up in hospital with a broken back following the hit-and-run.

A GoFundMe page was set up by Julia Matthews, who says she is a colleague of the victim, with £130 raised so far.

Julia wrote: "I’m sure a lot of you seeing this have seen the video of a blue Citroen ramming people and cars in a Tesco car park in Rickmansworth just before Christmas.

"I’m sure you’ve read or heard how they attempted to rob the store, make a get away and in the process injure two people, one of whom was seriously injured and is now in hospital with a broken back.

"This is my friend and colleague and she shouldn’t have had this happen to her ever, but especially not just before Christmas. She should be at home with her family, with her partner and her child enjoying the holiday.

"I’ve created this for all those who have asked for a way to help, to help bring some positivity and love into her life when it has been shattered by selfish criminals."

Shocking footage shows staff appearing to challenge the pair before customers also step in to intervene.

Shoppers and other motorists can be seen blocking the blue hire car - a blue Citreon C3 - into the car park as it reverses and accelerates in a bid to escape.

The Citreon smashed into other vehicles a number of times and sustained damage to its passenger-side door and wing mirror in the mayhem.

The video shows shoppers striking the car with golf clubs and supermarket trolleys as they attempt to stop the driver from getting away.

The Citreon driver is then seen eventually forcing his way out of the car park and racing away.

Hertfordshire Police later said two people were hurt - with one woman taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The force is now searching for the vehicle and its occupants and urging any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: "At 1.57pm December 23 police were called to a report of a car being in collision with several people outside the Tesco store in Harefield Road, Rickmansworth. The ambulance service also attended the incident.

"One person was taken to Watford General Hospital after sustaining a serious injury. Another person sustained slight injuries and also received hospital treatment."
