SCAMMERS tried to trick a car seller out of hundreds of pounds by squirting oil up the exhaust.
The pair used the ruse when they turned up to buy a used BMW 320 from dad-of-two Sam Mangera.
They asked to take the car for a test drive but when smoke began pouring out of the exhaust they asked him to knock £1,100 off the asking price.
However, suspicious Sam declined and checked CCTV footage from a camera outside his home. He then spotted one of the men squirting oil into the exhaust.
Shop manager Sam, who later reported the incident to police, said: “I’m glad I knew what I was doing. If someone didn’t they could lose a lot of money.”
Sam, 27, was contacted by the pair when he advertised the 11-year-old car for sale for £2,500. They looked it over before he arrived to meet them.
When they took the car for a test drive, the oil in the exhaust heated up and smoke began pouring out.
But Sam, from Blackburn, Lancs, said he was suspicious because it had happened to him when selling another car.
He added: “They do it because it causes no long-term damage.
“It just takes a while for the oil to go and then they have bought a great car for a cheap price.”
