Onlookers said the Clio and a Vauxhall Vectra ran a red light moments before the crash in Stockport, Gtr Manchester, at 11.30am.

Builder Jamie Blackshaw, 36, said: "Two cars came past, they were both on the wrong side of the road. "The second car... flipped, it hit a lamp post and then hit an elderly couple walking together.

"The man was thrown into the bushes while the woman was on the pavement, blood everywhere.

"I was so shocked, I can’t get it out of my head."

Two men in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after the crash today.

Shocking pictures showed debris strewn across the road, with a pile of blankets and a first-aid kit laying on the pavement.

The man and woman, aged in their 60s, are believed to have been walking on the pavement next to the A6, south of Stockport town centre, when they were hit.

Police said both remain in a serious condition in hospital tonight, the man with arm, leg and head injuries and the woman with multiple injuries.

A police officer in an unmarked BMW reportedly witnessed the cars going through the red light moments before the horrific crash.

As he pulled out to follow them - before switching his sirens or blue lights on - the Clio crashed.
