Hollywood legend Danny DeVito mocked and told to ‘poke your nose out’ after bizarre endorsement of Jeremy Corbyn in the election

Twins and Matilda actor urged Brits to go out and vote for the Labour leader saying ‘UK - you’ve got the guy’

THIS ELECTION has been short on celebrity endorsements so far - but Jeremy Corbyn may have secured the biggest (and weirdest) one to date.

Hollywood legend Danny DeVito has been mocked for declaring his support for the Labour leader and told to "poke your nose out" of British politics.

The star of Twins, Matilda and the hit TV show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia posted a tweet saying: "UK. You've got the guy.”

He urged his four million followers to sign up to take part in the June ballot, adding: “Register by May 22nd. Vote for Jeremy Corbyn ...show us how it's done.”

The diminutive actor included the hashtag #Grime4Corbyn - a reference to the musicians like Stormy and JME who are also supporting the opposition boss.

It remains to be seen if it will provide the boost the hapless leftie needs to close the yawning gap to Theresa May, but he has been attacked for his intervention ahead of the snap poll.

And pollster YouGov poured cold water on the endorsement, saying "only 1% of Brits ever voted for a party because of a celebrity" telling them to.

They tweeted the actor with the results of recent research showing in fact people are twice as likely to change their mind and vote against the endorsement than back it, if they notice it at all.

Mr Corbyn responded to the backing from the 72-year-old, tweeting: “If Danny DeVito is saying you should register to vote then you really should.”

But the endorsement should not be a surprise, given that the veteran American star came out in support of the Labour leader last year.

In response one Twitter user wrote: “You were good in Taxi Danny but you need to poke your nose out of this one.”

And another posted: “If you vote for somebody just because a celebrity tells you to, you really shouldn't be voting.”

During the height of the Panama Papers tax avoidance scandal he praised Mr Corbyn’s approach as he said he liked “the idea of people telling the truth”.

He said: ”What is it? Why doesn't anybody want to pay taxes and just fix the country and make everybody have a good life? It's really crazy.”

Mr DeVito added: “I think he [Mr Corbyn] would make a great PM. Way better than [David] Cameron.”

The actor, who backed Bernie Sanders and attacked Donald Trump in the US Presidential race, added of the UK political scene: "Look at your history, for crying out loud!

"A little sketchy guy hanging out with George Bush. What was his name? Blair."
