Sainsbury’s brings back popular Nectar card offer in run-up to Christmas – but fans slam ‘unfair’ change

SAINSBURY'S has brought back a popular Nectar card offer in the run-up to Christmas - but it's not good news for all shoppers.

The supermarket famously axed the Nectar Double Up promotion in 2021, leaving fans fuming.

The offer previously allowed customers to swap their points for vouchers worth twice the usual amount.

Last year, it instead trialled a different rewards scheme using Nectar points for some customers.

This year, a version of the popular offer has come back letting shoppers double up their Nectar points for an in-store voucher.

To do it, simply go on the Nectar app between November 15 and November 24.

One shopper posted in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group that she nabbed £40 for just £20 worth of points.

And another added: "Used mine £50 for £100 voucher!"

While a third said: "Will issue my voucher on the 24/11 (last day) so I can use it up to Christmas Eve.

"They are valid for a month from the day you issue."

However, only selected accounts have access to the promotion and Sainsbury's refused to share further details on how - but added that 100,000's of customers qualify.

One shopper vented on Facebook: "I didn’t get it and shop there loads! Since January I've only managed to earn £30! It’s rubbish for points."

And another added: "Selected accounts only. Bit unfair?!

"If you use nectar it should be for everyone. I shop in Sainsbury's every single week and I don't have it.

"Gutted as I've got £40 worth sat there so would have been really helpful to have been able to double it."

Other shoppers slammed the supermarket after they'd already spent their points, thinking Sainsbury's had axed the offer for good.

If you have access to the offer, you can find it on your app.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told The Sun: "We regularly trial lots of different ways for our customers to make the most of Nectar.

"We’re sorry for any disappointment the limited availability of this particular offer may cause.

"Customers can check their Nectar app regularly for future opportunities to collect and make the most of their points."

How does the Nectar card scheme work?

Under the Nectar card scheme, customers collect points when buying certain products or goods, in-store and online.

You receive one loyalty point for every £1 spent.

You also get one point for every £1 spent on fuel bought at Sainsbury's petrol stations and can pick up points at hundreds of partners as well, including Esso and eBay.

You can register and download an e-Nectar Card by downloading the app on your smartphone.

You then swipe it every time you shop and the points are added to your account, which can be used to get money off future purchases.

Each point is effectively worth 0.5p, meaning you need 500 points to get £2.50 off.

In April, Sainsbury's launched Nectar Prices, offering customers exclusive discounts in a bid to rival Tesco's Clubcard.
