Rangers face stiff competition for Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes with host of English clubs keen on transfer
RANGERS face stiff competition for the signature of Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes.
Steven Gerrard will also have to stump up a substantial fee for the highly-rated Senegal-born attacker.
The Premiership champions have run the rule over Gomes several times this season and have been tracking his progress closely.
But a host of English Championship clubs — including Brentford, Swansea, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Rotherham — are also hot on his trail.
Gomes, who has scored 15 times this term, is out of contract in June.
However, any potential buyers will still have to pay a transfer fee with Morecambe set to trigger a 12-month extension clause to guarantee themselves compensation for the player.
The Ibrox side have already started planning for next season with the pre-contract arrivals of Scott Wright, Jack Simpson and Nnamdi Ofoborh.
Former Aberdeen star Wright and Bournemouth defender Simpson made the switch north early during the winter transfer window.
Striker Fashion Sakala has also put pen to paper on a four-year pre-contract with the Premiership champions after agreeing a switch from Oostende.
The hitman started his career with Nchanga Rangers in Zambia before earning a move to Spartak Moscow in 2017.
He then moved to Belgium where he scored 13 goals in just 28 appearances.

Old Firm chiefs have previously been thwarted in attempts for their development teams to gain SPFL membership.
And now bosses of both clubs have opened talks to put B teams in Scotland's fifth tier for 2021/22.
SunSport understands there will be no Premiership reserve league next term and the Glasgow giants want to ensure their youngsters keep developing.
The Old Firm Colts wouldn't be eligible for promotion to League Two and crucially, the motion has the backing of the Lowland League board.
But entry to the current 17-team set up will depends on clubs voting in favour of the proposal.
