Ex-Chelsea star Jason Cundy slaughters Celtic and says they’ve less fans than some English League One sides

The ex-Spurs and Ipswich defender claims the Hoops would struggle to beat Stoke if they were in the English top flight

JASON CUNDY has claimed some English Championship and League One sides have more fans than Celtic - going by their Twitter followings.

Speaking on TalkSPORT’S Sports Bar show the former Chelsea star argued that the Hoops were not big outside of Glasgow and made the link between social media followers and supporters.

The Parkhead side have 433,000 followers on the social media site and Cundy, 47, says that is a measure of how many people support the Hoops.

He said: “I've looked on Twitter about how many people follow football clubs.

"Newcastle United have 1million followers, Celtic haven't got half of that.

"There are some Championship clubs and I reckon even some League One clubs that have a better Twitter following than Celtic.

"I know it’s not a science but it’s a barometer.

“Put me and Andy (Goldstein) together and you’ve got half of Celtic.

"They wouldn’t get anywhere near the top. You’re not Barcelona.

“I just don’t see it.

"I don’t doubt they’re supported well, but outside of Glasgow? Really?"

Cundy even had a pop at Glasgow, while trying to explain Celtic's large home gates.

“What else are you going to do in Glasgow? It’s either drink beer or go to football.”

Celtic moved 27 points clear of Aberdeen at the top of the Premiership last night with a 4-0 win over Inverness.

The Hoops are unbeaten in domestic competition this season and Cundy, 47, slammed the Premiership as “embarrassing” when discussing the level of competition.

He claimed the Scottish Champions would struggle to beat Stoke if they were in the Premier League.

He said: “If you watch Celtic the standard they are up against, they are of course head and shoulders above everyone else.

"But the standard is shocking, it’s embarrassing as the league table will show you that. It’s an appalling league.

“We saw Leicester win the title last season, United, Chelsea, City we’ve had four different winners in the last five years.

“I think they would be scrapping down the bottom (of the English Premier League). I can’t see them anywhere near the top half of the table.

“Mid to bottom half is the best I could give them.

“They are a very similar level to Stoke, I think Stoke would end up beating them.”
