MARK WILSON reckons Jeremie Frimpong has shown exactly why he was right to back the youngster as the top right-back in the country.

Former Celtic star Wilson sparked debate when he revealed his Old Firm XI in an exclusive chat with SunSport earlier this month.

The ex-Scotland international stunned Rangers supporters after picking Hoops teen sensation Frimpong ahead of Ibrox captain James Tavernier.

But after helping Celts to Betfred Cup glory, the 19-year-old continued his incredible rise to stardom by scoring in yesterday's 2-0 win over Hibs.

And Brechin City boss Wilson makes no apology by standing by his verdict, pointing to the Dutch starlet's sensational performances.

He told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "Last week I was asked to pick a combined Celtic and Rangers team for the cup final and I put Frimpong at right-back.

"I got a lot of stick for it because he's only played a handful of games.

"But I was basing it on ability and how good this kid is and what I've seen in the past.

"This is a guy who has made ten appearances, he's now scored two goals, he's got numerous assists.

"I've yet to see a winger go by him and that includes a £7million Ryan Kent.

"He's phenomenal and it's rare to find a player whose rose so quickly to success as he has."

Meanwhile talented Frimpong is setting his sights on a European mission.

The Celts cult hero hasn't been able to play in the Europa League so far this campaign as he wasn't named in Neil Lennon's squad for the group stages.

But with the last 32 on the horizon after the new year, he is aiming to make his mark on the continental stage.

Frimpong, who slotted home on 39 minutes after being played in by Odsonne Edouard, said: “I was just delighted to score my first home goal.

“It was really good, the team played amazingly and we deserved it.

“The fans are amazing so to score in front of them was the best feeling.

“I have been practising finishing in training and practice makes perfect.

“We won the final last week and I got a red card but I got over it.

“The manager told me not to worry about the sending-off and said I played well.

"It’s always good when you get the manager on side.

“I’m really excited to play in Europe — it’s going to be a good experience for me.”
