McKay revealed last weekend he’s desperate to put pen to paper and end the uncertainty around his future — insisting he was waiting on Rangers chiefs to get back to him.

It came after he’d scored two goals in two games against Partick Thistle and Hearts.

But McKay has been told he’ll need to be patient with Caixinha still not convinced.

The Gers boss said: “He needs to wait. If he is waiting then he needs to wait more, for the club to come back to him.

“Barrie is a great guy and a fantastic footballer but we are assessing him and will give him an answer as soon as possible.

“He’s been much more proactive in the last two games but I still want more from him.

“He’s been a very important player for the last two matches, scoring twice like Joe Garner too.

“They are two players living a good moment and football is about good moments. We now need to extend that.

“What does he need to do more? He needs to be more proactive.

“The game is a lot of phases and stages and I want all the players to be keen on the game. If things are not coming they need to look for it.

“When he needs to sacrifice he needs to do that as well.”

McKay has 12 months to run on his contract.

Asked if he’d want to sell him this summer if he doesn’t agree a new deal, Caixinha added: “No, but I want players here that are keen to come here.

“They have to feel for the club and have the passion to win for the club.

“Otherwise if they are thinking about contracts I think this is not going to be their place.”
