Irish acapella group The Trinitones go viral with George Ezra cover

Irish acapella group The Trinitones, who have gone viral with their cover of George Ezra's track Budapest, say they are "over the moon" with the reception it has received.

The Trinity College acapella ensemble describe themselves as having "a penchant for pop covers" and went viral with their cover of Wheetus's Teenage Dirtbag back in 2013.

Now they are repeating that success with their Budapest performance. Trinitones singer Sam White says the group didn't expect their George Ezra cover, featuring Cassy-O, Barcelona and Paradise, to blow up the way it did as "we were only doing it for fun".

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Sam said of the viral video: "We’re over the moon. We’ve received so many lovely messages and seen all the lovely comments that people have left under various posts featuring the video which has all been so positive."

They recorded the "secret performance" ahead of the Trinity Ball but didn't expect it would take off in the way it has, having racked up over 214,000 views (and counting) on their own Facebook page and almost 3 million views on The Metro UK's Facebook.

Sam explained: "It’s become a tradition for us to go live on our socials at Trinity Ball, videos in the past have done relatively well but this one has ended being arguably our most viral video since we released a cover of Teenage Dirtbag a few years ago.

"So we didn’t expect it all as we were only doing it for fun."

The Trinitones went on their first international tour to Australia last September and are doing a tour of Canada in North America from the end of May to the middle of June, stopping in Montreal, Vermont, Boston, Washington and New York. The group also gig around Dublin and do a bit of busking for Irish fans who want to see them perform live.

Sam revealed that the acapella group hope to "record an album soon which I'm sure will feature the George Ezra medley".

The singer said that it takes quite a lot of work to put together their performances.

"We tend to have a two and a half hour rehearsal once a week in Trinity", Sam said. "Every now again we do intense and fun rehearsal bonding weekends in places like Waterford where we learn a lot of new music. Especially with the tour coming up we are working hard to build up our repertoire."

"It is tough but we love it. Especially when things like this happen and getting opportunities to go on tour or perform at festivals like Electric Picnic it makes it all worthwhile."
