Liverpool plan for Caoimhin Kelleher to take a big step in his career next season, according to reports. The goalkeeper has featured for the first-team this season.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that Liverpool want to send Caoimhin Kelleher out on loan next season.

Kelleher is now 22 but doesn’t have too much senior experience at all. His first-team debut came last season in the League Cup, with an FA Cup game early in 2020 to follow.

This season saw Liverpool put more faith in him, however.

Alisson first picked up an injury quite early on. As expected, Adrian stepped in as cover but endured a torrid time. Most notably, the Spaniard struggled badly in a 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa.

It meant that Jurgen Klopp put Kelleher between the sticks the next time Alisson was out. The Irishman played two Premier League games and two Champions League games as a result.

He looked good, too, playing very well in what were by far the biggest games of his career. We’re at a point now where no fans would complain if he were the second-choice goalkeeper next season.

But it appears Liverpool have bigger plans for Kelleher. They want him playing regular football at a good level and that means a loan deal for the 2021/22 campaign.

Kelleher out on loan next season

We think Kelleher has big potential at this point. He looked more than comfortable in big games despite his lack of experience, for instance, while 22 is actually very young for a goalkeeper.

This is probably the right move, then. If Liverpool could get him a good Championship loan, let alone a Premier League move, then Kelleher could kick on considerably with regular football.

And who knows? Maybe he’s destined for a long-term role with Liverpool. The next big step is seeing what he can do in a full season elsewhere.
