Students at a school have been sent home for at least two days after a number of positive Covid tests over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Wilsthorpe School has closed on Tuesday May 4 and Wednesday May 5 due to the positive results amongst students and staff.

Although students will be learning at home, lesson times at the Long Eaton secondary school will remain as normal.

In a letter to parents and carers, the school said: "Over the weekend, we have had a number of positive Lateral Flow Test and PCR Test results amongst students and staff.

"A significant number of the Wilsthorpe community will need to self-isolate for 10 days as a result.

"We have decided to take this cautious approach in consultation with our colleagues at Two Counties Trust and public health agencies to limit the potential spread of Covid-19.

"Students will work from home and will receive live teaching input on Google Classroom at the beginning of each lesson, following their normal cycle of lessons."

Headteacher Mr Hobbs added in the letter: "I do not underestimate how disruptive this situation is for students and families and we have not taken this decision lightly.

"You will receive a further update, no later than 1.00pm on Wednesday, regarding the remainder of the week.

"By that point, we will be able to bring some students back into school or we will have to remain closed until the following week."
