Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens has appeared at the Old Bailey charged with the kidnap and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard.

The 48-year-old appeared via video link from the Category A Belmarsh Prison in south-east London for the hearing on Tuesday morning and Sarah's family were said to be observing remotely.

Couzens was seen wearing a light red jumper and grey joggers and appeared to have a wound to his forehead.

He spoke to confirm his name and date of birth at the hearing, before the Recorder of London Judge Mark Lucraft QC.

Prosecutor Tom Little QC told the judge there has been “a significant and wide-ranging investigation” in the case.

The judge said a plea hearing would be held on July 9 at the Old Bailey and a provisional trial date has been set for October 25.

It was said a trial could last for up to four weeks.

Couzens has been remanded in custody at the Old Bailey until the plea hearing in July.

He is accused of snatching the marketing executive as she walked home from a friend's flat in Clapham, south London, on the evening of March 3.

Her body was found hidden in an area of woodland in Ashford, Kent, on March 10.

Couzens, who worked on the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command unit, was not on duty at the time of Ms Everard's disappearance.

The defendant, from Deal in Kent, was charged on Friday and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court the following day.

Ms Everard's death has sparked vigils across the country in her memory and demands for action to tackle violence against women.
