Manchester City will resume contract talks with Ilkay Gundogan after securing the club-record signing of fellow midfielder Rodri this week.

That is according to ESPN, who say the club want to tie Gundogan down as his contract enters its last year.

City and Gundogan had previously begun negotiations, but a deal could not be agreed and the talks were put on hold until the end of last season.

Gundogan played a crucial part in the run-in as City won an unprecedented domestic treble, with Fernandinho injured. Now, although City have moved to break their transfer record to sign Rodri and increase competition in midfield, the report says the next priority is to keep Gundogan.

The 28-year-old has made 114 appearances for City since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, and will compete with Rodri, Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden for a starting spot next season.

Meanwhile, new Anderlecht player-manager Vincent Kompany reportedly wants to sign Philippe Sandler on a loan deal next season.

Kompany left City after an 11-year association this summer, to take the position at his former club Anderlecht.

After bringing former City winger Samir Nasri to the club, Het Laatste Nieuws say Kompany will target Sandler to bolster his new defence.
