Former Manchester United striker Joshua King says he was disappointed and bitter that a possible return to Old Trafford fell through in 2020.

King, then at Bournemouth, emerged as a late option for United to sign at the end of the January transfer window last season. However, the Cherries held firm as they looked to survive in the Premier League, and United turned their attentions elsewhere to sign Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

King came through the academy at United, and has since joined Everton with three goals in 13 appearances - but none in the Premier League.

Reflecting on his last 18 months, King says he really wanted to rejoin United last year and was frustrated that the move fell through.

He told Norwegian outlet TV2 : “Of course, it was frustrating. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world and it would have been fun to go back where it all started in England.

“But that’s life as a football player. You are under contract and you cannot choose to go whenever you want, you have to be bought out. It did not happen.

"I’m not so bitter now, but when it happened, I was quite disappointed that it did not go through.”

Speaking shortly after the move fell through, King said he was hopeful United would reignite their interest, but instead they signed Edinson Cavani in the summer and extended Ighalo's loan.

He said: "I will not lie, because I really wanted to go there in January, but what happened, happened. I know why things happened. We’ll just have to wait and see. There is a lot that is open."

"What if United are still interested? That would be amazing. I was at United for five years and I learned lot there."
