Sacked Roberto Martinez received £10m pay-off from Everton

Belgium boss pockets eye-watering sum from Everton after sacking

ROBERTO MARTINEZ’S sacking cost Everton more than £10million.

The new Belgium boss invoked a clause in his Everton contract when he was sacked, which demanded that he be paid the remaining three years of his deal.

That added up to almost £12m, but after an independent hearing in London both parties agreed on a figure between £10m and £11m.

With Everton also having to pay Southampton £5m in compensation to acquire the services of Ronald Koeman, their switch of managers this summer has cost the club more than £15m.

Martinez signed a new Goodison deal in the summer of 2014.

After an outstanding first season in charge of the Blues, Martinez was offered a new five-year contract, despite his existing deal having three years to run.

The contract sought to protect Everton from clubs coveting Martinez’s services, and the manager himself.

Any club who wanted to offer the Spaniard a new role would have to pay the remainder of his contract in compensation, but conversely if Martinez was sacked before the deal had run its course in July 2019, Everton would have to pay the full amount also.
