A man has given up running a popular Lincolnshire pub after being injured in a brutal beating from a barred punter.

Edward Cummings suffered a tear to his eye and was left with blood dripping from it as Joshua Hickman lashed out after he was stopped from entering the Butcher’s Arms in Old Leake in November 2018.

The 23-year-old had been barred by the previous landlord, but still turned up to the pub in Main Road with his sister.

However, when they got involved in a dispute with the former landlord, Mr Cummings intervened to stop the pair getting inside, only to get a beating for his troubles, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

Tom Heath, prosecuting, said: "Mr Cummings felt a blow to the side of his face.

“It was a kick by Hickman aimed at his head. Hickman then punched Mr Cummings on multiple occasions.

“He threatened to stab the landlord and asked someone to get him a machete.

“When the police arrived no weapon was seen."

Police arrived and Hickman then left after claiming to officers that he had been attacked by other people.

Mr Heath said that as a result of the incident Mr Cummings was left with blood coming from his eye as well as swelling and bruising around the eye.

Mr Cummings was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a tear to the pupil of his right eye.

He has since continued to have problems with the eye and has given up running the pub.

Joshua Hickman, 23, of Caleb Hill Road, Old Leake, near Boston, admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm as a result of the incident on November 16, 2018.

He was given a 20 month jail sentence suspended for two years with a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 30 days.

Neil Sands, for Hickman, told the court: "The reports paint a picture of a very troubled young man with a number of issues."

He urged that Hickman should be given the opportunity to engage with mental health services and this would help prevent a repeat of the behaviour he showed on the night of the incident.
