Bolton Wanderers will begin next season’s League One campaign with a points deduction of minus 12 points after the recently relegated Championship club confirmed that they were appointing administrators on Monday.
The club, from Greater Manchester, finished second-bottom of the Championship table with 32 points, one point ahead of bottom Ipswich Town, after a season of controversy and financial instability.
On Monday afternoon, the club confirmed that Paul Appleton and Asher Miller of David Rubin & Partners hd been appointed as joint administrators of the club and Burnden Leisure Limited (BLL) in the High Court.
The administration relates to an unpaid tax bill of £1.2 million.
The club’s financial issues have been a consistent issue throughout the season, with the club most recently unable to fulfil their Championship fixture against Brentford due a players’ strike over unpaid wages.

Paul Appleton said: “This has obviously been a long-running situation and it is vitally important that we quickly establish the position of both the football club and the holding company.
“It has got to the stage where the Trust could not sit back and allow the club to go into liquidation. Decisive action had to be taken and the Trust believes the decision is in the best interests of Bolton Wanderers.”
“Everybody at the club as well as the supporters need a sense of clarity and that is what I will be seeking to provide as quickly as possible.”
